OCD? The term “I am feeling OCD today” has become much more common that part of me cringes when I hear this. There are myths of what someone may think is actual Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and there are also definite behaviors that deserve closer attention. At what point do you have to come to where you would need to seek professional help for symptoms related to OCD?
Someone may say they are feeling OCD because they keep personal belongings neat, tidy and organized or some may think they are a “germaphobe” and make it a priority to wash their hands several times. Someone else may think they have OCD because they are get overly anxious and think they need to need to “chill” or “take it easy.”
OCD is ultimately based in anxiety. Some common fears in people with OCD can be fear of germs resulting in constant handwashing so repetitively that it damages their skin. Fear of a certain person whom they will avoid at all costs even when this person works in the same office resulting in avoiding work altogether. Some have a fear of being harmed or fear harming others and as a result they live closed off from the outside world.
Medication can definitely help if you suspect you or someone you know thinks they have an issue with certain obsessions. When the obsession subsides when they wash their hands two or three times to be thorough or are naturally neat and tidy that is not to be taken too seriously. If you find yourself not able to leave for work because you are experiencing anxiety over if you left someone on, it may be time to seek help.
