The Pain and Effort Correlation. There is a television show on Saturday mornings around 11am about young entrepreneurs who are trying to start their business. This show is geared toward teenagers, but the lessons taught by the host of the show hold true for any person in business at any age such.

One episode was about a young man essentially marketing his startup business going door to door handing out flyers and telling people about what he offers. At one point of this episode, it was really evident how discouraged this guy had become as he had been turned down by a handful of people and was starting to doubt his business idea.

The host of the show stepped in and had a conversation with the entrepreneur about putting themselves out there and taking risks. Continuing, he talked about when a person can get over rejection and not take it personally, how this frees up a person to keep going and to eventually thrive.

A successful business takes a lot of time, effort, and resources. A lot of that effort is moving past discouragement. There will be some clients that I do not gel with, and that is perfectly okay. There will also be some clients who get what they need out of two or three sessions and move on.

I read an article about a world-ranked marathon runner. This runner mentioned how the best athletes are the ones who know there will be pain and discomfort in training. The pain from the effort of training is part of the process. This runner did not bail out on his fourth or fifth run as he was able to push through and leverage the pain and process of it.

Part of the discomfort in training in running a business is seeing something through a different perspective. My long-term goal is having my business to be my sole source of income, but it is not right now and that is okay. However, the business has made a profit and is sustainable to continue doing business.

Life may be a marathon and not a sprint, but either way they both require continuous training and persistence.

Whatever training you are going through, whether it pertains to your job, health, family recognize the pain that is heathy and can be pushed and recognize pain that you need to see a doctor for. Not all pain is bad.

A big takeaway is to celebrate the smallest wins. The platform that I use to track my finances for my business showed it made barely over what it did last year. Not exactly a Fortune 500 accomplishment. What encouraged me is that this past year I have had about 160 sessions with my business alone, not counting my other contract jobs. That is 160 times I got to give a person my undivided attention for 50 minutes. That’s a win! A victory of any kind comes through the process of training and effort. Sometimes that training is looking through the lens to see a different perspective.

The hardest part in my experience of running a business is the patience required. Several people advised me it will take a long time to see this business where I ideally want it. A big temptation of mine is to put all my effort into one of my contract jobs that is the easiest. A big part of the appeal for me in running a startup business is the challenge. Even though that challenge has been not seeing a profit until October of a fiscal year, it is worth it!
