I have been meeting with Jermaine on a weekly basis for about six months now. Jermaine seemed to be as normal could be. Part of me was wondering “why are you here for counseling?” Several sessions in Jermaine starts to open up more.
Jermaine is the pastor of a church and he is taking over from a previous pastor. One of his biggest struggles is his large IQ of 160. Jermaine says he imagines every possible outcome. This does not bring in anxiety, it just tires him out. Recently with the new normal of the Coronavirus, Jermaine said that he feels sort of guilt because the pandemic sort of simplifies everything.
He is a high challenge personality as he enjoys having a lot of things going on in his life. One of the reasons Jermaine sought counseling is he said that he does not know how to relax. To complicate things further, Jermaine says his blood pressure can spike over outcomes that most of the time does not happen.
Therapy for Jermaine has been about being in the present, enjoying the moment and dealing with a task or problem. A challenge for the client is cutting his thoughts off as he thinks of so many possible outcomes. While Jermaine is not quite at the point that he feels like he can truly relax, there has been some progress.
I met with Jermaine this week and he has come up with a plan. With the pandemic going on, he now has the time to do a lot more than what he used to. Part of that plan is to plant a garden.
