Why counseling? The reason for initially seeking counseling can be a wide range of reasons such as depression or anxiety or feeling overwhelmed at work and you are not sure how to cope with something in your life that you cannot make sense of yet.

I have been working full-time as a therapist for three years now and can tell you there are definitely people who either have to see a therapist to maintain certain medical benefits, are court ordered to see a therapist or have been “strongly advised” by a family member to seek therapy.

What about those areas of life that are sort of ambiguous and you are not sure if it needs more attention or not? I can tell you I sought out counseling about 20 years ago from being burned out in ministry at the time and had very little motivation to keep going.

After than initial counseling session I did continue to see the same counselor every month or so. When I went to additional counseling, I knew I was entering a safe and confidential space and had a professional’s undivided attention.

A major aspect of counseling is that you are seeing someone who you do not know. This way, the counselor can be completely objective about what you are talking about. On your side, you are free to be completely honest and forthright about what you are dealing, and you can know what is said stays between you and your therapist only.

Sure, you can talk to a friend or family member, but you cannot be 100% truthful with them because of your already established relationship with them. By all means, if you have a friend or family member you feel free to talk to, that is terrific! If you really want an unbiased and professional opinion, a licensed therapist is crucial.

If you are looking for a therapist near you and a Google search is a great way of finding one. I happen to be a therapist in Charlotte, NC but am licensed to counsel anyone in the state of North Carolina. In Google, try looking for “psychotherapist,” “find therapist,” “therapy near me,” or even “counseling charlotte, nc.” If you feel like you have hit a wall you are not able to get past, call me at (704) 458-6298 or email me at jeffhelms@clearerthoughtspllc.com.
