The holidays! It is that time of year again! Thanksgiving, Black Friday (that’s a holiday, right?), Christmas and New Year’s. Personally, I love the holidays, I always have. Thanksgiving tended to be my favorite holiday as my birthday would fall on Thanksgiving every so often. Thanksgiving was great because my family would get together and there would always be hilarity and hijinks!
However, not everyone likes the holidays. Some have a really hard time getting through them turning to unhealthy ways to cope with what they are feeling. Maybe they are missing a loved one or many loved ones over the years and it has become too much to bear. Others have fallen onto hard times and the holidays serve as a reminder of what they used to have.
When I was a kid I loved the holidays and still do, but my view of it has become more realistic. Going into the holidays, know your triggers of what has caused you be sad, angry or what not and do what you can to either minimize the trigger or avoid it altogether.
The fact that the holidays have the highest suicide rates have been contested, but that does not mean it does not happen.
